IV Sedation
The highest level of sedation available at SmileArts Dental. Medication is given intravenously to make the patient have zero to very little memory of the procedure that was performed.
Best Candidates
IV sedation at SmileArts is best for adults and children over the age of 14. Before an IV sedation appointment is made, our team will go through your medical history, current medications, and concerns to ensure IV sedation is a good choice for you. IV sedation can be used for minimally invasive procedures like simple fillings and crowns to full mouth implants and oral surgery.
Before Your Appointment
- Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours prior to appointment.
(Eating less than 6 hours prior to procedure may result in vomiting, aspiration and/or hospitalization).
Please take all morning medications with a small sip of water. - Wear loose clothing.
- Have a responsible adult with you to drive you home.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking 24 hours prior to appointment.
- NO jewelry. Please refrain from wearing dark fingernail polish the day of the surgery.
- If you are taking blood pressure medications, take it as directed with as little water as possible.
- If you are diabetic, please check your blood sugar the day of surgery and inform us of the results at your appointment.
- YOU MUST HAVE A DRIVER BRING AND STAY WITH YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR SEDATION APPOINTMENT AND FOR THE REST OF THE DAY WHILE AT HOME.
What To Expect
Before your procedure begins, if desired for relaxation, nitrous oxide gas will be administered through a nasal covering that will relax you and also make it easier to administer the IV. A highly trained oral surgery assistant will start an IV and the Doctor will come and administer the correct dosage for your procedure. A member of the SmileArts team, as well as Dr. Aaron, will monitor your vital signs and your response to the medicine, adjusting the volume as needed throughout the procedure, so you remain comfortable. IV sedation is normally used along with a local anesthesia such as lidocaine to numb your mouth in the areas being treated.
Treatment Aftercare
The MOST important thing that you can do is go home and REST. Giving your body a chance to recover post anesthesia is best achieved through resting and no planning of any activities. If you live alone, it is recommended that you arrange to have someone stay with you for at least 4 hours after you leave the office but it is recommended that you have someone stay with you for the remainder of the day. AVOID any operation of mechanical or electrical machinery/devices, driving for the remainder of the day, making any important decisions or signing important documents for 12 hours, and avoid consuming alcoholic beverages and/or smoking for at least 24 hours.
